Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyrs Heraclius, Paulinus and Benedimus suffered for Christ in the city of Athens. They taught the pagans about Christ and urged them to abandon the worship of senseless idols. These chosen vessels of God were brought to trial with their followers who had discerned the true path. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Heraclius as a patron when they bear the name Heraclius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 18. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
