New Calendar September 4 Old Calendar September 17
Why they are a saint
She was one of the four daughters of the Apostle Philip the Deacon (October 11). As we read in the Acts of the Apostles (21:8), all four were virgins and prophets. Her fame as a prophetess and a worker of miraculous healings attracted the attention of the Emperor Hadrian, under whose tribunal she was cruelly tortured.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Hermione as a patron when they bear the name Hermione at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 4. As a martyr, she is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
