Why they are a saint

Hieromartyr Hypatius, was bishop of the city of Gangra in Paphlagonia (Asia Minor). In the year 325 he participated in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea, at which the heresy of Arius was anathematized.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Hypatius of Gangra as a patron when they bear the name Hypatius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 16. Greek Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
