The holy New Martyr Ignatius was born in the village of Eski Zagora in the Trnovo region of Bulgaria, and was named John in Baptism. The Orthodox Church commemorates Ignatius the Martyr of Mount Athos on May 1.

Orthodox Christians usually take Ignatius the Martyr of Mount Athos as a patron when they bear the name Ignatius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 1. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
