Why they are a saint

Saint Irene lived in Constantinople in the first half of the ninth century. When her husband Saint George was sent into exile because he venerated the holy icons, she and their children went with him.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Irene as a patron when they bear the name Irene at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 13. Greek Orthodox faithful also honor her as one of their own.
