New Calendar February 4 Old Calendar February 17

Why they are a saint

He was born to a noble family in Alexandria. For a short time he taught rhetoric in Pelusium in Egypt; but soon his love for the things of God led him to flee to the Desert as a solitary. After a year of ascetical life, he returned to Pelusium, where he was ordained to the priesthood. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Isidore of Pelusium as a patron when they bear the name Isidore at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 4. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
