Why they are a saint
With the other holy prophets, Joel is venerated as one who spoke the word of God. Joel is remembered as abrahamic prophet, author of the Book of Joel. The Book of Joel is kept among the twelve minor prophets; the Church hears it especially in the promise of the Spirit. His memory is kept with the other Old Testament righteous whom the Church venerates as saints.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Joel as a patron when they bear the name Joel at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 19. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
