Why they are a saint

John of Constantinople (died 839), also known as John the Confessor, was an abbot of the Cathares Monastery, in Constantinople. He clashed with the Byzantine Emperor Leo the Armenian, who was instituting a policy of iconoclasm. John survived torture for his iconodulism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take John as a patron when they bear the name John at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 3. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
