Why they are a saint

Saint John, called Barsanuphius, was a native of Palestine. He was baptized when he was eighteen years old, and later became a monk. Because of his ascetic life, Saint John was consecrated Archbishop of Damascus. Venerated as a hierarch, a bishop who shepherded the Church in holiness.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take John-Barsanuphius as a patron when they bear the name John-Barsanuphius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 29. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
