The great Georgian hymnographer, philosopher, and orator Saint John of Shavta labored in the 12th and 13th centuries, during the reign of the holy queen Tamar. The Orthodox Church commemorates John of Shavta-Gelati on June 9.

Orthodox Christians usually take John of Shavta-Gelati as a patron when they bear the name John at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 9. Georgian Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
