Why they are a saint

Martyrs Jonah and Barachisius and those with them: Xanithanus, Lazarus, Maruthanus, Narsinus, Elias, Marinus, Abibus, Siusithinus, and Sabbas (4th C) are commemorated by the Orthodox Church on March 28. Venerated as martyrs who died for the faith in Christ; little else about their lives has come down to us.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Jonah as a patron when they bear the name Jonah at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 28. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
