Righteous Joshua, son of Nun (Navi)

New Calendar September 1 Old Calendar September 14

Why they are a saint

In the Septuagint he is called Jesus, the Greek form of Joshua. Of the Hebrews who fled Egypt in the Exodus, only he and Caleb were found worthy to enter the Promised Land. He was Moses’ chosen successor to lead the Hebrew people. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Joshua as a patron when they bear the name Joshua at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 1. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.

Prayer

O holy Joshua, pray to God for us.

A short general prayer to a saint, not a liturgical text. No public-domain troparion for this saint is included.
