Why they are a saint

This martyr was a veteran soldier, and was impeached by his officers for the Christian faith, before Maximus, governor of the Lower Mœsia, which was afterwards called Bulgaria. The Orthodox Church commemorates Julius on May 27.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Julius as a patron when they bear the name Julius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 27. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
