Katherine of Alexandria was learned virgin of Alexandria who confounded pagan philosophers and was martyred under Maximinus. Patron of students and scholars in later devotion. The years given for this life are 3rd–4th century. Orthodox Christians honor that confession of Christ unto death.

Orthodox Christians usually take Katherine of Alexandria as a patron when they bear the name Katherine; Catherine; Ekaterina; Katerina at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 24. Those who share her calling as a student also ask her prayers.
