Why they are a saint

Disdaining the vain glory of this world, Saint Laurence lived in a cave and conquered the passions through prayer and fasting. The Orthodox Church commemorates Laurence on January 20.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Laurence as a patron when they bear the name Laurence at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 20. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
