Why they are a saint
The Martyr Lucius, a senator, was beheaded by the sword on the island of Crete in the year 310 for confessing his faith in Christ. The Orthodox Church commemorates Lucius on August 20.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Lucius as a patron when they bear the name Lucius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 20. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
