Why they are a saint
A disciple of Patriarch Niphon at the time that the latter was labouring in the asceticism of silence at Vatopedi, Macarius longed for martyrdom for the sake of Christ, and begged St Niphon’s blessing to seek it. The Orthodox Church commemorates Macarius of Thessalonica on September 27.

Orthodox Christians usually take Macarius of Thessalonica as a patron when they bear the name Macarius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 27. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
