Why they are a saint

Saint Mamai served as chief shepherd of the Georgian faithful from 731 to 744. The information we have about his life is scarce, but it is known that Saint Mamai was abbot of Zedazeni Monastery and died a martyr for Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Mamai as a patron when they bear the name Mamai at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 3. Georgian Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
