Why they are a saint
Saint Mammas was from Gangra of Paphlagonia. He was born in prison, where his parents were suffering for Christ's sake and ended their lives. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Mammas the Martyr as a patron when they bear the name Mammas at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 2. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
