Why they are a saint

The New Martyr Manuel of Crete was a Christian of the eighteenth century who during his childhood was captured by Muslim Turks and compelled to convert to Islam. After growing to be an adult, he confessed his faith in Christ and returned to being a Christian. For being an apostate to Islam, Manuel was beheaded on the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea in the year 1792.

Orthodox Christians usually take Manuel of Crete as a patron when they bear the name New at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 15. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
