Why they are a saint

He was born to an eminent family in Cyprus, and was well-educated. He was married and had children, but when his wife died he left his family to live as a monk in Syria. Venerated as a hieromartyr, a clergyman who was put to death for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Marcellus of Apameia as a patron when they bear the name Marcellus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
