Why they are a saint

The Hieromartyrs Marcellus, Philagrius and Pancratius were disciples of the holy Apostle Peter and were made bishops by him: Saints Marcellus of Sicily, Philagrius of Cyprus, and Pancratius of Taormina. The Orthodox Church commemorates Marcellus on February 9.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Marcellus as a patron when they bear the name Marcellus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 9. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
