Hieromartyr

Marcian of Syracuse

Hieromartyr Marcian, Bishop of Syracuse

New Calendar October 30 Old Calendar November 12

Why they are a saint

Marcian of Syracuse served as Bishop of Syracuse. Marcian, or Marcianus was a bishop and martyr, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. A hieromartyr is honored for dying for Christ while serving as a pastor or, in some commemorations, as a named witness of that rank. The calendar keeps his martyrdom as a testimony under persecution.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Marcian of Syracuse as a patron when they bear the name Marcian at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 30. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
