Why they are a saint

The Martyr Marinus was a soldier who suffered in Caesarea of Palestine in the third century. When he was about to be promoted to centurion, he refused to swear the customary oath invoking the pagan gods, or to offer sacrifice to idols. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Marinus of Rome as a patron when they bear the name Marinus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 16. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
