Why they are a saint
The Life of Saint Marinus has been preserved in the Byzantine Synaxaristḗs, which states that the Holy Martyr lived during a time when the Church was being persecuted, and that he was a zealous Christian. The Orthodox Church commemorates Marinus on March 17.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Marinus as a patron when they bear the name Marinus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 17. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
