Saint Mark the Ascetic was born in Athens during the fifth century, and became a monk in the Nitrian desert (Lower Egypt). The Orthodox Church commemorates Mark the Ascetic of Egypt on March 5.

Orthodox Christians usually take Mark the Ascetic of Egypt as a patron when they bear the name Mark at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 5. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
