Why they are a saint
Born a Roman, he first served in the military service. Later he accepted monasticism and after seven years of good ascetical efforts, according to the revelation of God, he was installed as Bishop of Tours in France. Having become glorified for his unusual generosity, great miracles and ability to prophesy, he died in about the year 400.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Martin the Merciful as a patron when they bear the name Martin at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 12. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
