Atchara has been a Christian stronghold since apostolic times. It was through this region that Saint Andrew the First-called entered Georgia, preaching the Gospel for the first time in the Iberian land. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Orthodox Christians usually take Martyred Fathers and Mothers of Atchara as a patron when they bear the name Martyred at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 29. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
