New Calendar February 22 Old Calendar March 6

Why they are a saint

Saint Maurice, a military commander of Syrian Apamea, suffered in the year 305 under the emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311) together with his son Photinus and seventy soldiers under his command (only two of the soldiers’ names are known, Theodore and Philip). The Orthodox Church commemorates Maurice and his son on February 22.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Maurice as a patron when they bear the name Maurice at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 22. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
