Why they are a saint
The Holy Martyr Maximus suffered under the emperor Decius (249-251). Maximus was a layman and a merchant. He was a devout Christian and he led many pagans to faith in Christ the Savior, and persuaded them to accept Baptism. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Maximus as a patron when they bear the name Maximus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
