Why they are a saint

He was one of the bold Confessors who opposed the false Union of Lyons perpetrated by the Emperor Michael VIII in 1274. The Orthodox Church commemorates Maximus on December 19.

Orthodox Christians usually take Maximus as a patron when they bear the name Maximus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 19. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
