Melchizedek

Righteous Melchizedek, King of Salem

New Calendar May 22 Old Calendar June 4

Why they are a saint

He was a “priest of the most high God” (Genesis 14:18-20), who blessed our Forefather Abraham and “brought forth bread and wine,” prefiguring the Holy Eucharist, centuries before the Law was given to Moses or Christ became incarnate. The Orthodox Church commemorates Melchizedek on May 22.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Melchizedek as a patron when they bear the name Melchizedek at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 22. As a ruler, he is also remembered by those who bear responsibility for others.
