Why they are a saint
Saint Mercurius of Kiev Caves Lavra was an ascetic in the Far Caves of Saint Theodosios during the XIV century, and was a strict observer of the Church's fasts. The Orthodox Church commemorates Mercurius on August 7.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Mercurius as a patron when they bear the name Mercurius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 7. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
