Why they are a saint

Saint Joseph was a monk of Dionysiou Monastery on Mt. Athos, where he shone forth with the virtues of monastic life. He was an iconographer, and he painted the icon of the holy Archangels on the iconostasis of Dionysiou’s main church. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Orthodox Christians usually take Monastic Martyr Macarius of Dionysiou as a patron when they bear the name Monastic at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
