Why they are a saint

Saint James was tonsured at Docheiariou monastery on Mount Athos. Moving to the neglected Georgian Skete of Saint John the Baptist, he restored it under the supervision of Elder Ignatius. Fulfilling various obediences in the monastery, Saint James ascended to the heights of purity. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Monastic Martyrs James as a patron when they bear the name Monastic at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 1. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
