Why they are a saint

The Monk George Khozebites was born on the island of Crete. At the death of his parents he set off to Palestine to venerate at the holy places. Here he entered into the Khuzebite monastic community, situated between the River Jordan and Jerusalem, and he later became head of this monastery. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Monk George as a patron when they bear the name Monk at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 8. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
