Why they are a saint
With the other holy prophets, Nathan is venerated as one who spoke the word of God. Nathan is the prophet who confronted King David and spoke concerning the house from which Christ would come. His memory is kept with the other Old Testament righteous whom the Church venerates as saints.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Nathan as a patron when they bear the name Nathan at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 13. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
