Why they are a saint

Saint Nectarius of Bitel was born in the small town of Bitel (or Butili) in Bulgaria. In the world he was named Nicholas. Before a Turkish invasion his mother had a vision: the Most Holy Virgin Herself appeared and told her to flee and go into hiding with her husband and children.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Nectarius of Bitel as a patron when they bear the name Nectarius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 15. Bulgarian Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
