Why they are a saint

Newly-Appeared Martyrs of Lesbos, Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene were martyred by the Turks on Bright Tuesday (April 9, 1463) ten years after the Fall of Constantinople. The Orthodox Church commemorates New Martyrs Raphael on April 9.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take New Martyrs Raphael as a patron when they bear the name New at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 9. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
