Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyr Nicephorus lived in the city of Syrian Antioch. In this city lived also the presbyter Sapricios, with whom Nicephorus was very friendly, such that they were considered like kindred brothers. Through the onset of a disagreement they quarreled, and their former love changed into enmity and hate.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Nicephorus as a patron when they bear the name Nicephorus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 9. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
