Why they are a saint
Saint Nicholas was the author of many church services, but little else about his life is known. He lived in the second half of the 13th century, and the last years of his life coincided with the reign of King Vakhtang III, the son of the holy king Demetre the Devoted. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Nicholas as a patron when they bear the name Nicholas at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 3. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
Prayer
O holy Nicholas, pray to God for us.
A short general prayer to a saint, not a liturgical text. No public-domain troparion for this saint is included.
