Why they are a saint
Raised in piety, he worked as a stone-mason until an accident deprived him of his reason and of the power of speech. The Orthodox Church commemorates Nicholas of Chios on November 13.

Orthodox Christians usually take Nicholas of Chios as a patron when they bear the name Nicholas at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 13. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
