Why they are a saint

Saint Nikēphóros was born at Constantinople into a rich and illustrious family. His parents, Andrew and Theodora, raised their son in the Christian Faith. After their death, young Nikēphóros distributed all his wealth to the poor and went to Chalcedon. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Nikēphóros as a patron when they bear the name Nikēphóros at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 19. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
