Why they are a saint

Saint Niphon of Athos lived in the fourteenth century, and was the son of a priest. From childhood he was raised under the principles of strict Christian morality. Upon taking monastic tonsure he soon was ordained to the holy priesthood. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Niphon of Mount Athos as a patron when they bear the name Niphon at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 14. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
