Why they are a saint
With the other holy prophets, Obadiah (Abdia) is venerated as one who spoke the word of God. The Book of Obadiah, shortest of the prophetic books, is kept among the twelve minor prophets. His memory is kept with the other Old Testament righteous whom the Church venerates as saints.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Obadiah (Abdia) as a patron when they bear the name Obadiah at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 19. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
