Why they are a saint
The New Martyr Onuphrius, in the world Matthew, was born in Bulgaria in Gabrovo in the Trnovo diocese. Matthew became angry with his parents one day, and said he wished to become a Moslem. Unfortunately, he was overheard by the Hagarenes, who wished to take him away. Venerated as a new martyr, one who gave his life for Christ in more recent centuries.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Onuphrios as a patron when they bear the name Onuphrios at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 4. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
