Why they are a saint
Hieromonk Pambo, Hermit of the Kiev Caves, was a confessor for the Faith. Captured while on a monastic obedience, he was taken off by Tatars and for many years suffered from them for his refusal to renounce the Christian Faith. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Orthodox Christians usually take Pambo the Recluse of the Kiev Far Caves as a patron when they bear the name Pambo at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 18. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
