Why they are a saint

Saint Paul of Xeropotamou, in the world Procopius, was the son of the Byzantine Emperor Michael Kuropalatos, who later resigned the imperial office and became a monk in a monastery he built. The Orthodox Church commemorates Paul on July 28.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Paul as a patron when they bear the name Paul at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 28. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
