Why they are a saint

Saint Pelagia the Penitent was converted to Christianity by Saint Nonnus, Bishop of Edessa (Saturday of Cheesefare Week). The Orthodox Church commemorates Pelagia the Righteous on October 8.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Pelagia the Righteous as a patron when they bear the name Pelagia at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 8. Antiochian Orthodox faithful also honor her as one of their own.
