Why they are a saint

Saint Philotheus was a native of Thessalonica, and received the monastic tonsure at an early age. After living for a time at Mt Sinai, he went to Mt Athos and became the igumen of the Great Lavra. In 1347 he became Metropolitan of Heraclea, Thrace. Venerated as a hierarch, a bishop who shepherded the Church in holiness.

Orthodox Christians usually take Philotheus as a patron when they bear the name Philotheus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 11. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
